Tragic Landslide near Vaishno Devi Shrine Kills 34 Pilgrims

Vaishno Devi landslide tragedy

August 26, 2025: A devastating landslide struck the path leading to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district today, claiming the lives of at least 34 pilgrims. The disaster occurred amid continuous heavy monsoon rains that have affected the region for several days.

The incident took place near Adh Kunwari, about halfway along the 12-kilometre pilgrimage route from Katra to the shrine atop the Trikuta hills. Pilgrims had sought shelter under a small iron shed near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya to escape the torrential rain when the hillside gave way, burying them under debris. Reports indicate that among the deceased were 16 women and two children, and at least 23 others sustained injuries, some in serious condition.

Authorities stated that unusually heavy rainfall, measured at more than seven times the seasonal average in parts of Jammu, caused flash floods and multiple landslides across the region. Rivers including the Tawi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Basantar overflowed, leading to destruction of bridges, vehicles, and disruption to electricity and communication networks.

The Indian Army, police, and local disaster response teams immediately launched search and rescue operations. The Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has temporarily closed the pilgrimage route to ensure safety and facilitate relief efforts.

Officials emphasized that the tragedy highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather in hilly regions. Relief operations are ongoing, with a focus on aiding the injured and providing support to the families of victims, while measures are being reviewed to prevent similar disasters in the future.
