28 August,2025: In a unique blend of tradition and rehabilitation, inmates at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune have once again prepared eco-friendly Ganesh idols from natural clay ahead of the Ganeshotsav festival. The initiative, now a regular feature of the prison’s rehabilitation program, aims to provide inmates with creative skills while promoting environmental consciousness.
The idols, carefully handcrafted from ‘shadu mati,’ are fully biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals. Officials at the prison stated that the project is part of a larger effort to equip inmates with vocational skills and improve their mental well-being.
“This initiative not only helps inmates develop new skills but also provides them with a sense of purpose and accomplishment,” said a spokesperson from Yerwada Central Jail. “It is heartening to see the public respond positively to their efforts.”
In the previous year, inmates sold 172 eco-friendly idols, generating a revenue of Rs 1.76 lakh, which was used to further support rehabilitation programs. The demand for these sustainable idols continues to grow as citizens increasingly prefer environmentally friendly options during festival celebrations.
The success of this initiative demonstrates how traditional practices can be harmonized with modern rehabilitative measures. By engaging in creative activities such as idol-making, inmates gain confidence, learn valuable skills, and contribute to society in meaningful ways.
As Ganeshotsav 2025 approaches, the eco-friendly idols from Yerwada Jail are expected to attract devotees keen on celebrating the festival in a sustainable and responsible manner. The program serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art, creativity, and community support.
