September 2, 2025: In the wake of devastating floods affecting large parts of Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today, assuring the state of the Central Government’s full support in managing the crisis. The phone call took place shortly after PM Modi’s return from an official visit to China.
The floods, caused by unprecedented monsoon rains and the release of excess water from major dams, have left hundreds of villages inundated, particularly in the Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts. Official sources report that over 2.5 lakh people have been affected, with standing crops on approximately three lakh acres destroyed. The death toll has risen to 30, including children, as rescue and relief operations continue.
During the conversation, PM Modi expressed concern over the hardships faced by the people of Punjab and assured CM Mann that all necessary assistance would be provided by the Centre. He emphasized that immediate steps would be taken to strengthen relief operations and facilitate recovery efforts.
CM Bhagwant Mann briefed the Prime Minister on the ongoing rescue efforts, including the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, provision of essential supplies, and the establishment of temporary shelters for affected residents. Mann underscored the state government’s commitment to ensuring timely aid reaches all flood-hit areas.
In addition, helicopters and other state resources are being deployed to deliver relief materials to remote and inaccessible locations. The Chief Minister has directed Deputy Commissioners of affected districts to intensify rescue operations and ensure the uninterrupted distribution of essential supplies.
Officials from both the state and central governments are closely monitoring the situation, coordinating efforts to restore normalcy and assist displaced populations. The collaboration highlights the importance of a unified response in the face of natural disasters.
As Punjab continues to battle the consequences of severe flooding, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow official advisories. Relief operations are expected to continue in the coming days until the floodwaters recede and affected communities are stabilized.
