September 2025– Eastern Afghanistan is facing a worsening crisis following a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck on August 31, 2025. In the days since the initial quake, multiple powerful aftershocks have hit the region, causing additional injuries and further disrupting rescue and relief operations in the remote, mountainous areas.
Widespread Destruction from the Initial Quake
The earthquake struck Nurgal District in Kunar Province, near the border with Pakistan. Its shallow epicenter intensified the damage, destroying homes, schools, and public infrastructure. Reports indicate that thousands of people have been left homeless, with over 2,200 confirmed dead and more than 4,000 injured. The scale of destruction makes this one of the deadliest natural disasters in eastern Afghanistan in recent history.
