August 28, 2025: The Union Cabinet has given its approval for India’s official bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, marking a major step in the nation’s efforts to strengthen its global sports presence.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket arena with a seating capacity of 1,32,000, is expected to host most of the Games’ events. Experts note that Ahmedabad’s modern sports facilities and robust infrastructure make the city well-suited for accommodating international competitions.

Alongside approving the bid, the Cabinet authorized the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement and provision of financial support to the Gujarat government, contingent upon the bid’s success. Authorities highlighted that the support would help ensure smooth organization and world-class standards for the Games.

Hosting the Games is anticipated to provide significant economic benefits, including increased tourism, local employment opportunities, and growth in sports culture. Observers suggest that successfully conducting the Commonwealth Games could pave the way for India to pursue a future Olympic Games bid.

To accommodate the expected surge of visitors, the Gujarat government has introduced a hotel incentive scheme to expand the state’s lodging capacity. The initiative aims to prepare Ahmedabad and surrounding areas for large-scale international events.

With Cabinet approval secured, Ahmedabad is now poised to become the center of attention for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, reinforcing India’s ambitions to establish itself as a major player on the international sporting stage.
