Air India Crew Member Arrested in Mumbai for Smuggling Gold Worth ₹1.41 Crore from US

Air India gold smuggling

June 16, 2025 In a startling development at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai Customs officials apprehended an Air India crew member on charges of gold smuggling. The accused, a senior in-flight crew member operating on a New York-Mumbai flight, was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle gold valued at approximately ₹1.41 crore into the country.

The seizure was made on Sunday after the customs intelligence unit received specific inputs regarding potential illegal activity on board Air India flight AI-116 arriving from JFK Airport, New York. Upon arrival, a thorough inspection led to the discovery of undeclared gold concealed within the baggage of the airline crew member.

According to official sources, the smuggled gold weighed more than 2.2 kilograms and had been meticulously hidden to evade detection. The individual was immediately detained and taken into custody for interrogation. During the initial questioning, the crew member reportedly failed to provide any satisfactory explanation for the possession of such a large quantity of gold.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has now taken over the investigation to ascertain whether the accused was working independently or as part of a broader smuggling syndicate. Officials are also probing the possibility of insider collusion within the airline or airport staff.

A senior customs official stated, “The incident is being treated with utmost seriousness. Airline crew members are trusted with high responsibilities, and such violations undermine the integrity of the aviation system. We are expanding our investigation to determine how often this route has been misused and whether other personnel may be involved.”

This arrest has prompted Air India to launch an internal inquiry into the matter. In an official statement, the airline said, “We have zero tolerance for illegal activities and will fully cooperate with the authorities in their investigation. Disciplinary proceedings have already been initiated against the crew member involved.”

Gold smuggling cases have seen a rise in recent years, particularly through air routes, with smugglers increasingly employing creative concealment methods and leveraging insiders. According to customs data, more than 350 kg of gold has been seized at Indian airports in the first half of 2025 alone.

Legal experts note that smuggling gold of this magnitude can attract severe penalties under the Customs Act, 1962, including imprisonment of up to seven years along with heavy fines.

As investigations continue, airport security agencies are on high alert, and additional scrutiny is being placed on inbound international flights, especially those arriving from gold-exporting nations. Authorities are also reportedly reviewing previous flight records and passenger manifests to detect any patterns or repeat offenses.

The arrest underscores growing concerns about the exploitation of aviation personnel for illegal cross-border trade and is likely to trigger stricter enforcement protocols for airline crew entering Indian territory.
