7 Killed in Helicopter Crash Near Kedarnath, Fifth Incident in Six Weeks

Kedarnath chopper crash

June 16, 2025:
A helicopter carrying seven people crashed near Kedarnath on Monday morning, killing all on board. The incident marks the fifth helicopter crash in the region in the past six weeks, raising serious concerns over aviation safety during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra season.

According to officials, the helicopter—operated by a private aviation company—was ferrying pilgrims from Kedarnath to Phata when it lost contact with air traffic control around 11:30 a.m. Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, later confirmed that all seven individuals, including the pilot, had died in the crash.

The wreckage was located in a remote mountainous area, where bad weather and low visibility are believed to have contributed to the crash. Preliminary reports suggest possible mechanical failure or sudden weather changes as contributing factors. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a probe to determine the exact cause.

District Magistrate of Rudraprayag, Saurabh Gaharwar, confirmed the casualties and said the identities of the deceased are being verified. “We are coordinating with the aviation company and concerned agencies to inform the families and facilitate the necessary formalities,” he said.

This is the fifth helicopter-related incident in the Himalayan pilgrimage corridor since early May. Aviation experts have warned about the increasing frequency of such accidents in the Kedarnath region, where extreme terrain and volatile weather pose significant risks to air travel.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the loss of lives and ordered a high-level investigation. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic helicopter crash near Kedarnath. My prayers are with the bereaved families. We are committed to strengthening aviation safety in the region,” Dhami said in a statement.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also taken note of the recent spike in accidents and is reportedly reviewing safety regulations for operators flying in high-altitude pilgrimage zones. Officials indicated that enhanced pilot training, stricter flight clearances, and improved weather surveillance systems are under discussion.

Helicopter services have become a popular mode of transport for Char Dham pilgrims, especially senior citizens and those unable to make the difficult trek to the Kedarnath shrine. However, the growing number of accidents has prompted calls for tighter regulation and improved infrastructure.

As rescue operations wind down, authorities emphasize the need for systemic reforms to prevent further tragedies during one of India’s most sacred pilgrimages.
