Air India Express has submitted an insurance claim amounting to ₹39.4 billion following the Kozhikode aircraft accident, which occurred on August 7, 2020. This stands as one of the largest insurance claims in the nation’s civil aviation sector.

The mishap took place when Flight IX-1344, operating under the Vande Bharat Mission, skidded off the runway during landing at Kozhikode International Airport amid heavy rainfall. The aircraft broke into two after overshooting the tabletop runway. A total of 190 passengers and crew were aboard. The tragic event claimed the lives of 21 people, including both pilots, and left over 100 others injured.

The insurance coverage includes claims for the destroyed aircraft, passenger fatalities and injuries, third-party damages, and losses incurred to the airport infrastructure. The claim is led by New India Assurance Company, with the support of several domestic and international reinsurance partners.

According to insurance officials familiar with the matter, this case has set a benchmark in terms of claim volume. The final payout will contribute to covering various liabilities, including legal compensations for victims’ families and financial reimbursement for the aircraft loss.
