Anaya Banger, a transgender cricketer, has appealed to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Professional Cricket Councils (PCC) to adopt science-based policies for the inclusion of transgender athletes in cricket.
Speaking at a public forum earlier this week, Banger emphasized the need for cricket’s global governing bodies to move beyond societal biases and instead implement inclusion frameworks rooted in scientific research. She argued that decisions should be made on the basis of hormone levels, physiological data, and transition timelines rather than traditional gender norms.
“Cricket, like every sport, must evolve with science and society,” Banger stated. “Trans athletes deserve inclusion, not exclusion.”
At present, the ICC does not have a uniform policy regarding the participation of transgender athletes in international or domestic cricket. Some domestic leagues have taken steps toward inclusivity, but no consistent guidelines are in place at the international level.
Banger’s appeal has received support from experts in sports science. Dr. Meera Kulkarni, a noted sports physiologist, supported Banger’s position, stating that it is unscientific to assume that all transgender athletes possess an unfair advantage. She called for the development of case-by-case evaluation policies that respect both competitive fairness and human dignity.
