August 28, 2025: Apple Inc. has partnered with Reliance Jio to introduce Rich Communication Services (RCS) on iPhones in India, just ahead of the global launch of the iPhone 17. This collaboration aims to improve the messaging experience for Jio users by offering features such as high-resolution image sharing, read receipts, typing indicators, and enhanced group chat capabilities.
The rollout of RCS is expected to bring iPhone messaging closer to the functionality of Apple’s iMessage, providing a modern alternative to standard SMS and potentially competing with popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Messages under RCS will be delivered over mobile data or Wi-Fi, supporting rich media and interactive content without extra charges.
The timing of the announcement, just before the iPhone 17 launch scheduled for September 9, is seen as a strategic step to attract more users in India. With Reliance Jio’s extensive subscriber base of nearly 500 million, the partnership is expected to accelerate the adoption of RCS messaging across the country.
Experts in the telecom industry believe this move marks a significant shift in India’s messaging ecosystem. RCS offers a more interactive and multimedia-friendly communication platform compared to traditional SMS, signaling a step forward in modernizing mobile messaging standards.
Apple’s collaboration with Jio reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening local partnerships while implementing global technology standards. As the iPhone 17 release draws near, analysts predict that RCS-enabled iPhones will quickly gain popularity among Indian consumers.
The development is expected to reshape the country’s messaging landscape, offering users richer communication options and reinforcing Apple’s position in the Indian smartphone market.
