A tragic accident in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote Anjaw district has left at least 21 construction workers feared dead after a truck carrying them plunged into a deep gorge near the India-China border. The incident, which occurred on the night of December 8, came to light only on December 10 when a lone survivor alerted authorities, highlighting the severe connectivity challenges in the region.
The ill-fated vehicle was transporting labourers, primarily from Assam’s Tinsukia district, to a construction site along the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road, a strategic border infrastructure route. Due to the treacherous terrain and lack of mobile network coverage, authorities were unable to detect the accident immediately, delaying rescue operations by nearly two days.
The Indian Army, in coordination with local administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), launched a high-priority search and rescue operation. Helicopters and specialized teams were deployed to navigate the rugged terrain and extreme winter conditions. As of now, the operation remains challenging due to the area’s dense forests, steep slopes, and freezing temperatures.
The lone survivor, who suffered multiple injuries, was airlifted to a nearby hospital. His testimony has been crucial in locating the accident site. “The connectivity issues in Anjaw district make any emergency response extremely difficult. The delay in reporting has significantly hampered timely rescue efforts,” said a senior official involved in the operation.
This tragedy underscores ongoing safety concerns regarding the transportation of labourers in remote border areas. Workers in these regions often face risks due to poorly maintained vehicles, narrow roads, and extreme weather conditions, emphasizing the need for stricter safety regulations and improved infrastructure.
