June 30, 2025 — In a significant development in the South Calcutta Law College rape case, Kolkata Police have confirmed that CCTV footage corroborates the survivor’s allegations. The 24-year-old student has accused two senior students and an alumnus of the college of sexually assaulting her inside the campus premises on June 25.
According to police officials, the incident took place in the guard’s room of the college, situated in the Hazra area of South Kolkata. The accused allegedly lured the woman into the secluded room under false pretenses before perpetrating the assault. The horrifying incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community and has sparked demands for swift and stringent action.
CCTV Footage Strengthens Case
Speaking to the media on Sunday, a senior Kolkata Police officer confirmed that CCTV footage from the campus has provided “crucial evidence” that supports the survivor’s narrative. “The video footage aligns with the timeline and location mentioned in the FIR. It clearly shows the presence of the accused individuals along with the complainant at the site around the time of the incident,” the officer stated.
The police have identified the suspects and taken two of them into custody. Search operations are ongoing to apprehend the third accused, who is reportedly absconding. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to fast-track the case.
Medical and Forensic Tests Conducted
The survivor has undergone a medical examination, and forensic samples have been sent for analysis. “All protocols as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court and National Commission for Women (NCW) are being followed meticulously,” said an official from the Women’s Grievance Cell of Kolkata Police.
The NCW has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued a notice to the state police and college authorities, seeking a detailed action-taken report within 48 hours.
Outrage and Demands for Justice
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation from student bodies, civil society groups, and political leaders. Student unions at South Calcutta Law College and other institutions staged protests demanding justice for the survivor and stricter security protocols on college campuses.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concern, stating, “No one guilty will be spared. We have asked the police to ensure the investigation is transparent and swift.”
In response to the public outcry, the college administration has suspended the two students named in the FIR and issued a show-cause notice to security staff regarding lapses in campus safety.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The accused will be charged under sections related to rape, criminal conspiracy, and wrongful confinement under the Indian Penal Code. The police have also approached the college to obtain academic records and ID details of the accused for further verification.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal emphasized the department’s zero-tolerance policy on crimes against women. “We are treating this case with utmost seriousness. The survivor’s safety and dignity are our top priorities,” he said.
As the investigation progresses, the case continues to raise pressing questions about safety within educational institutions and the mechanisms available to protect students from sexual violence.
