Delhi University Extends Single Girl Child Quota to Postgraduate Courses from 2025

DU adds PG seat for single girl child from 2025.

New Delhi, June 12:
Delhi University (DU) will extend the Single Girl Child (SGC) quota to its postgraduate (PG) courses from the academic session 2025, according to a report by PTI. Under this initiative, one supernumerary seat in each PG programme will be reserved for a woman who is the only girl child in her family.

The decision, aimed at promoting gender equity and higher education among women, was taken after internal discussions within the university’s admission committee and academic council. Until now, the SGC quota was available only at the undergraduate level.

A university official confirmed that the reservation will be implemented as a supernumerary seat, meaning it will be added over and above the regular intake for each PG course. The policy will not reduce the number of seats available to other categories.

To be eligible, applicants must provide valid documentation proving they are the only female child in their family. Detailed guidelines regarding eligibility criteria and application procedures are expected to be released in the coming months.

The move is seen as a step in line with national efforts such as the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, aiming to support and encourage the education of girls across the country. Officials believe that this measure will particularly benefit women from underrepresented communities and boost female participation in disciplines where gender disparity remains prevalent.

With the 2025 admission season approaching, Delhi University is also expected to issue a formal notification outlining the operational framework for implementing the SGC quota at the PG level.

The extension of the Single Girl Child quota marks a significant shift in DU’s admission policy and is expected to influence similar actions in other higher education institutions across the country.
