June 17, 2025 — In a major breakthrough in the investigation of the tragic Air India Express crash near Ahmedabad, DNA analysis has confirmed the identities of 80 victims. Authorities reported that 33 of the identified bodies have been handed over to their respective families for final rites.
The accident, which occurred last week, involved an Air India Express aircraft that crashed during landing at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The impact led to the deaths of more than 100 people and left several others injured. Due to the severity of the crash and subsequent fire, many bodies were charred beyond recognition, prompting the need for forensic identification.
Officials from the Gujarat Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) confirmed that DNA matching was conducted using samples collected from the crash site and compared with genetic material provided by relatives of the passengers. The process was coordinated with central investigative and aviation authorities.
“Forensic experts worked around the clock to identify the victims with accuracy and speed. This was essential for ensuring that the remains are returned to their loved ones with dignity,” said an official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Families from multiple states including Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh have received the remains of their loved ones. Air India Express, along with state authorities, has arranged transportation and support for the final rites. Special chartered flights and hearse vehicles were deployed to assist in the process.
The crash, which has shocked the nation, is currently under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Black box data and cockpit voice recordings are being analyzed to determine the exact cause of the incident. Preliminary reports suggest a possible technical failure, but officials have not ruled out other factors, including human error or weather-related issues.
Meanwhile, Air India Express has announced financial compensation for the victims’ families and injured passengers. Medical assistance and counseling support are also being provided to survivors and grieving families.
The incident has raised concerns over aviation safety protocols, especially in challenging weather conditions. Aviation experts have called for a comprehensive review of landing procedures and airport infrastructure, particularly at high-traffic terminals during the monsoon season.
As identification and repatriation efforts continue, authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to rely on official updates. DNA testing is still underway for the remaining unidentified bodies, and further handovers are expected in the coming days.
The government has assured full transparency in the investigation and pledged to take corrective action based on the AAIB’s findings. A memorial service is being planned by Air India Express to honor the victims of the crash.
