June 30 ,2025— A multi-storey residential building in Shimla’s Krishna Nagar locality collapsed on Sunday amid continuous rainfall and unstable soil conditions. Fortunately, the building had been evacuated just hours earlier, preventing any injuries or loss of life.
The structure, consisting of five floors, had begun to show signs of damage due to days of relentless rain in the region. Cracks appeared on the walls and land beneath the foundation had started shifting, prompting authorities to issue an urgent evacuation notice late Saturday evening.
The building’s owner confirmed that residents were moved out after visible warning signs and following advisories from the local administration. “We noticed the walls developing cracks and informed the authorities. Thankfully, the evacuation was completed before the collapse,” he said.
The moment of collapse was recorded on camera and has since been widely circulated online. The footage shows the entire structure crumbling within seconds, raising concerns about the safety of buildings in landslide-prone areas of Himachal Pradesh.
Heavy Rainfall Worsens Landslide Threat
Shimla, like several other parts of Himachal Pradesh, has been experiencing intense monsoon activity, which has led to landslides, road blockages, and structural damage in several areas. Krishna Nagar, situated on a steep slope, is among the locations frequently flagged for landslide risks during the rainy season.
District officials, including Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, confirmed that the area was under close observation due to reports of land movement. “Our teams had inspected the site and advised evacuation as a precautionary measure. The timely response helped avoid what could have been a major disaster,” Kashyap stated.
Disaster management teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in affected zones, with efforts underway to identify and secure other vulnerable structures.
Urban Expansion and Climate Concerns
Experts have expressed growing concern over the unchecked construction across Shimla’s hillsides. Many buildings are constructed without adequate geological surveys, making them highly vulnerable to collapse during extreme weather events. Environmentalists warn that the region’s fragile terrain cannot withstand the pressure of unplanned urbanization, especially in the face of worsening climate patterns.
In 2023, Himachal Pradesh witnessed severe monsoon-related tragedies, with multiple landslides and flash floods causing significant damage and loss of life. This latest incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for stricter building regulations and disaster resilience planning.
As rainfall continues to lash northern India, the focus remains on early warning systems, evacuation readiness, and structural assessments in high-risk areas. The collapse of the Krishna Nagar building, though resulting in no casualties, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather and inadequate infrastructure planning in hill states like Himachal Pradesh.
