Ganpati Mandals in Pune Advance Visarjan Timings Ahead of Lunar Eclipse

Pune Ganpati daytime immersion

August 28, 2025: In view of the total lunar eclipse expected on September 7, several Ganpati mandals in Pune have decided to complete their immersion processions by noon on Anant Chaturdashi, September 6, departing from the customary practice of late-night Visarjan.

Traditionally, the Ganpati Visarjan in Pune witnesses grand processions continuing deep into the night, with thousands of devotees participating in music-filled and vibrant celebrations. However, the impending celestial event has prompted organizers to reschedule festivities to avoid conducting rituals during the eclipse period, which is considered inauspicious according to Hindu astrology.

Officials from leading Ganpati mandals stated that the decision was taken after consulting astrologers and keeping public convenience in mind. “Completing the immersion before the lunar eclipse ensures that all rituals are performed at an auspicious hour. Devotees can participate safely during the day,” a spokesperson said.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has welcomed the change, announcing measures for smooth conduct of daytime processions, including traffic diversions and enhanced police deployment along major immersion routes. Authorities noted that the revised schedule would help manage large crowds more efficiently and reduce congestion.

Astrologers pointed out that lunar eclipses traditionally call for caution in performing religious ceremonies. Conducting Ganpati Visarjan prior to the eclipse aligns with established religious norms and is considered more propitious.

While many devotees have expressed support for the early immersions, appreciating the combination of faith and safety, others lament the absence of the traditional night-time grandeur. Despite this, the mandals remain committed to carrying out celebrations with full devotion and adherence to religious guidelines.

Pune will thus witness a unique Anant Chaturdashi this year, with day-time Ganpati processions blending traditional rituals, religious observances, and public safety considerations.
