Google has announced the rollout of Gemini AI-powered summary cards for Gmail as part of its May 2025 Workspace feature drop. The new functionality, aimed at enhancing productivity and streamlining email management, is now available to users of the Gmail mobile app on both Android and iOS.
According to the company, the Gemini-powered summaries will automatically appear at the top of eligible email threads, particularly those that are lengthy or involve multiple replies. These summary cards provide users with concise overviews of their conversations, reducing the need to scroll through entire threads to catch up on ongoing discussions.
Previously, Gmail offered the option to manually generate summaries for emails using Gemini AI. With this update, the feature becomes automatic in applicable cases. Summaries are updated dynamically as new messages are received in the thread, ensuring that users always have access to the most current information.
The feature is currently available for English-language emails and is being gradually rolled out. Users in Rapid Release domains began receiving the update on May 29, with a wider rollout to Scheduled Release domains expected over the next two weeks. Eligible users include those on Google Workspace Business Starter, Standard, and Plus plans; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus plans; Google One AI Premium subscribers; and education accounts with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons.
Google has also emphasized user control over the new feature. Those who prefer not to use AI-generated summaries can disable them by turning off the “Smart features” option in Gmail settings. Users will also retain the ability to manually request a summary if one is not automatically generated.
The new feature is part of Google’s broader initiative to integrate Gemini AI across its productivity suite. In addition to email summaries, Google recently introduced AI-generated video summaries in Google Drive. This functionality allows users to extract key takeaways from videos that include captions, saving time and improving content accessibility.
Enhancements to Gmail’s smart reply system were also unveiled during Google I/O 2025. The updated feature now offers more personalized and context-aware responses, drawing on information from users’ Gmail and Google Drive accounts to refine tone and relevance.
The introduction of Gemini-powered summary cards is seen as a key step in Google’s strategy to embed AI more deeply into everyday workflows. By offering smarter tools that reduce time spent on routine tasks, the company aims to help users stay organized and efficient in an increasingly digital work environment.
With continued investment in AI technologies like Gemini, industry analysts expect further advancements in how Google Workspace tools assist users in managing communication, content, and collaboration.
