A head constable of the Delhi Police was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery worth Rs 51 lakh from the Govindpuri police station’s evidence locker.
The accused, identified as Head Constable Sandeep, reportedly misappropriated the valuables over several weeks by exploiting gaps in surveillance and security protocols within the police malkhana. The stolen items include large quantities of gold ornaments and unaccounted cash.
A routine audit brought the theft to light last week, prompting an internal inquiry and subsequent police investigation. Authorities recovered a significant portion of the stolen goods from the accused’s residence in Faridabad during a raid.
Delhi Police officials have registered cases under criminal breach of trust and theft, and the accused has been suspended pending further investigation.
Senior police officials have condemned the act, describing it as a serious breach of trust. “Such incidents undermine public confidence in law enforcement,” said a spokesperson.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police Commissioner has ordered a comprehensive review of security measures across all police stations and mandated surprise inspections of evidence storage units.
This case has reignited calls for reforms to strengthen internal controls and prevent corruption within the police force.
