August 14, 2025 — Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions in Delhi and Mumbai, prompting authorities to issue alerts to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi, signaling intense rainfall and potential flooding, while Mumbai faces widespread waterlogging due to overnight showers.
In Delhi, major roads including RK Puram, Dhaula Kuan, and Patel Nagar are submerged, causing severe traffic snarls across the National Capital Region (NCR). The Yamuna River has risen to 204.43 meters, just below the warning level, raising concerns over possible flooding. Commuters reported hours-long delays, and several vehicles were stranded in knee-deep water in low-lying areas. Authorities have urged residents to avoid waterlogged roads and follow local advisories.
Mumbai experienced over 100 mm of rainfall overnight, leading to flooding in Andheri, Hindmata, Dadar, and Sion. Traffic on the Eastern and Western Express Highways slowed considerably, affecting daily commuters. The IMD has maintained a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region, warning of continued heavy showers over the next few days.
Officials in both cities are closely monitoring water levels and coordinating emergency response teams to mitigate the impact. Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible, avoid travel through flooded areas, and follow updates from local authorities. The ongoing monsoon demonstrates the urgent need for improved urban drainage and flood management infrastructure.
As Independence Day approaches, authorities are emphasizing safety and preparedness to minimize disruptions from the heavy rains.
