Hinjawadi Traffic Crisis Deepens as ₹650 Crore Road Projects Remain Stalled Over Land Issues

Hinjawadi traffic congestion

June 28:
Traffic congestion around Pune’s Hinjawadi IT Park continues to create daily challenges for commuters, as several major road infrastructure projects worth ₹650 crore remain stalled due to land acquisition hurdles. Despite being approved months ago, the much-anticipated projects have yet to begin physical execution, resulting in mounting pressure on existing roads and growing public frustration.

Hinjawadi, a major IT and business hub, hosts lakhs of professionals who travel daily from various parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The area has long suffered from bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. In response, authorities had announced multiple projects aimed at expanding road capacity and improving connectivity to surrounding localities such as Baner, Balewadi, and Wakad.

The proposed developments, under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), include widening of the Hinjawadi-Wakad stretch, constructing new service roads, and establishing alternate link roads. While administrative clearances and funds have been sanctioned, implementation has been delayed primarily due to disputes over land acquisition.

According to officials, negotiations with landowners are still underway. Several property owners have raised concerns over compensation packages, rehabilitation plans, and legal procedures. These unresolved issues have brought work to a standstill, with no clear timeline for project commencement.

“The delays in road development are affecting not just commuters but the region’s overall productivity. We’re forced to spend hours stuck in traffic every day,” said Sneha Joshi, an IT employee who travels to Hinjawadi Phase 3.

Authorities have attempted short-term measures such as deploying more traffic police, modifying signal timings, and encouraging flexible office hours. However, these steps have had limited success in addressing the underlying issue of inadequate road infrastructure.

Urban development experts have raised concerns that continued delays could impact the city’s growth trajectory. With Pune emerging as a major technology and innovation hub, lack of infrastructure may discourage future investment in the area.

“There needs to be faster coordination between the PMRDA, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and other agencies. Without timely land acquisition and project execution, the region’s infrastructure deficit will only widen,” said Arvind Deshmukh, an urban policy analyst.

Officials have indicated that efforts are underway to resolve land disputes and streamline the acquisition process. Revised compensation plans and legal facilitation measures are being considered to ensure faster handovers and minimize delays.

Until then, commuters and residents must continue to navigate the daily traffic snarls, hoping that long-promised road upgrades will soon become a reality.
