PM Modi Conferred ‘Dharma Chakravarti’ Title at Jain Acharya Vidyanand Maharaj’s Centenary Celebration

PM Modi honoured as 'Dharma Chakravarti' at Jain saint’s centenary

New Delhi, June 28, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with the distinguished title of ‘Dharma Chakravarti’ during a special ceremony commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Jain Acharya Vidyanand Maharaj in the national capital. The event was marked by the presence of senior monks, religious scholars, devotees, and national leaders.

Accepting the title, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude, stating, “I accept this recognition with humility, as sacred prasad from the feet of Acharya Vidyanand Ji.” He further emphasized that the honour reflects the values and aspirations of the people of India who continue to uphold principles of dharma.

The title ‘Dharma Chakravarti’ — symbolizing a sovereign of righteousness — holds deep spiritual significance in Jain philosophy and is traditionally reserved for those who actively advance ethical and spiritual ideals. This rare accolade was presented to the Prime Minister in recognition of his contributions to promoting moral governance, cultural integrity, and interfaith respect.

Acharya Vidyanand Maharaj, whose centenary was being observed, was remembered for his tireless efforts to revive and spread Jain teachings, particularly those centered on non-violence, truth, and universal compassion. The Prime Minister lauded the saint’s legacy, noting that his life embodied values that transcend religious boundaries and continue to guide India’s spiritual fabric.

The event also served as a platform to unveil new initiatives aimed at preserving Jain literature and philosophy. Plans for a spiritual research institute and digital preservation projects of Jain texts were announced, aiming to make Jain heritage more accessible to future generations. Global participation in the event, with international delegates joining virtually, highlighted the far-reaching influence of Jainism and India’s role as a spiritual torchbearer.

Jain monk Sugyeyasagar Ji Maharaj, who presided over the ceremonial proceedings, praised Prime Minister Modi for championing the cause of dharma in both governance and public life. He emphasized that the title was a tribute to the Prime Minister’s continuous efforts in safeguarding India’s spiritual identity.

This historic honour marks the first instance of a sitting Indian Prime Minister receiving the title of ‘Dharma Chakravarti’ from the Jain community, symbolizing the intersection of public service and spiritual responsibility.
