Hong Kong High-Rise Fire in Tai Po Leaves Four Dead, Dozens Feared Trapped

Hong Kong high-rise fire

A major fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court high-rise residential complex in Tai Po, northern Hong Kong, on Wednesday afternoon, killing at least four people and injuring several others. The fire spread rapidly via bamboo scaffolding surrounding the buildings, prompting authorities to issue a No. 5 alarm, the city’s highest emergency alert.

The blaze began at around 2:51 p.m. at the eight-block estate, which houses approximately 2,000 apartments. Flames quickly engulfed multiple floors, aided by scaffolding and construction netting used during ongoing renovations. Thick black smoke was visible from a distance as firefighters deployed ladder trucks to battle the fire.

Rescue teams confirmed four fatalities, including one firefighter, and at least five people were hospitalized, three in critical condition. Authorities say several residents may still be trapped, and temporary shelters have been set up for those evacuated. Sections of Tai Po Road have been closed to allow emergency vehicles access.

The fire highlights long-standing concerns over the use of bamboo scaffolding and flammable materials in Hong Kong’s high-rise construction. Experts warn such materials can accelerate fire spread, raising questions about safety standards and building regulations.

Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations while investigating the fire’s cause. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter fire safety enforcement and safer construction practices in the city’s densely populated residential areas.
