IAF Launches Operation to Evacuate Indians from Conflict Zones

Indian Air Force begins phased evacuation of Indians from conflict-hit foreign regions.

In view of the worsening situation in several foreign regions currently engulfed by armed conflict, the Indian Air Force has launched a special evacuation drive to bring back Indian nationals stranded in these troubled zones. The mission, officially named Operation Suraksha, commenced earlier this week and is being carried out under the direct supervision of the Ministry of External Affairs in coordination with the Ministry of Defence.

According to official sources, the first sortie was conducted on Monday night using a C-17 Globemaster aircraft, which successfully brought back a group of Indian citizens from a conflict-affected area in West Asia. Similar efforts are underway in other regions facing instability.

The government, responding to distress calls from Indian nationals abroad and appeals from their families, acted swiftly to organise this military-backed humanitarian operation. Embassies and consulates in the affected countries have been directed to maintain continuous communication with citizens and facilitate their safe passage to designated evacuation points.

A statement from the External Affairs Ministry noted: “The safety and security of Indian citizens remain the government’s highest priority. Necessary arrangements are being made to ensure timely and orderly evacuation from danger zones.”

Medical personnel, food supplies, and security support are being provided to those being rescued. Upon arrival in India, the evacuees are being medically screened and offered counselling services where necessary.

Past precedents of similar evacuations, including those during the Yemen crisis (2015), the Russia-Ukraine war (2022), and the Sudan unrest (2023), have equipped Indian agencies with the logistical and operational experience required for large-scale international rescue operations.

Officials have indicated that the operation will proceed in phases, depending on ground reports from conflict-hit nations. Meanwhile, Indian missions have urged all citizens in volatile areas to register promptly and remain in contact with embassy authorities.

This operation, once again, underscores India’s evolving capabilities in safeguarding its citizens overseas and responding with urgency during times of international crisis.
