The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has secured the top spot among Indian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2025, placing at the 150th position globally.

Released by global higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the rankings evaluated over 1,500 universities across various indicators such as academic and employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, and international outlook.

IIT Delhi’s improved rank this year highlights its growing international presence and consistent academic performance. The institute has shown strong results particularly in areas such as research citations and global partnerships.

Other Indian institutions like IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore also featured prominently, though IIT Delhi emerged as the highest-ranked from India.

Speaking on the achievement, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee said the ranking reflects the dedication of the faculty and students and the institute’s continuous focus on impactful research and academic excellence.

The institute has expanded its international collaborations and exchange programs, contributing to improved metrics in global engagement and reputation among employers.

QS officials noted that India’s overall performance in the rankings has improved over the years, driven by enhanced research output and strategic educational reforms.

However, the report also pointed out that Indian institutions still face challenges in areas like faculty-student ratio and attracting international students and staff.

Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President at QS, commented that India is progressing steadily on the global education map but needs to prioritize internationalization and quality infrastructure to compete with top global institutions.

The Ministry of Education acknowledged IIT Delhi’s performance and reaffirmed its support for initiatives that strengthen India’s position in global higher education.

The government stated that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and other reform-driven efforts are beginning to reflect in global assessments.
