IIT Madras Alumnus Dies of Heart Attack in UAE Hours After Bidding Farewell to Family

In a tragic turn of events, Hariraj Sudevan, a 37-year-old IIT Madras alumnus, passed away from a heart attack in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, mere hours after bidding farewell to his wife and son at the airport. The incident has sent shockwaves through the expatriate community and his family in Kerala.

Professional Background

Sudevan, originally from Alappuzha, Kerala, had been residing in the UAE for over 12 years. He earned his B.Tech from the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and an M.Tech from IIT Madras. Professionally, he served as a senior offshore construction engineer in Abu Dhabi, having previously worked for 11 years in Dubai as a subsea pipeline installation engineer.

The Final Hours

On the evening of Sunday, October 5, Sudevan dropped his wife, Dr. Anu Ashok, and their 10-year-old son, Ishaan Dev Hari, at Abu Dhabi International Airport as they returned to Kerala. Later, he visited his close friend Digin Thomas’s home to celebrate Thomas’s daughter’s birthday. Around 11:40 PM, Sudevan began experiencing breathing difficulties and profuse sweating. Despite immediate medical attention and CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Health Concerns Prior to Incident

While Sudevan had a history of diabetes, his condition was reportedly well-managed through diet and yoga. He had recently undergone a routine offshore medical check-up, which revealed minor ECG irregularities. Subsequent tests cleared him of any immediate concerns. He had occasionally experienced heartburn, which he attributed to gastric issues. His sudden demise has raised questions about the underlying health risks that may have gone unnoticed.

Community and Family Reactions

The news of Sudevan’s death has deeply affected his friends and family. His father-in-law, Ashokan KP, expressed the family’s devastation, stating, “We are all devastated and finding it difficult to accept the reality that he is no more.” Sudevan had planned to visit Kerala later this month to celebrate his son’s 10th birthday on October 27, a plan that will now remain unfulfilled.

Conclusion

Hariraj Sudevan’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of regular health check-ups and the potential risks associated with underlying health conditions. His passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew him, and his family and friends continue to mourn the loss of a beloved individual.
