Mumbai, May 22, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy rainfall across Maharashtra in the coming days, issuing alerts for several regions including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Konkan, and Vidarbha. The department has warned of possible localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in urban and rural areas due to the advancing monsoon.
In its latest advisory, the IMD attributed the increased rainfall to a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, supported by an active monsoon trough and cyclonic circulation. These factors are expected to bring intense showers, particularly to the coastal Konkan belt and central Maharashtra.
Orange and Yellow Alerts in Place
An Orange Alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. A Yellow Alert is in effect for interior districts such as Pune, Nashik, and parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha, where moderate to heavy rains are expected.
“Thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds are likely in isolated areas. Citizens are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing out during periods of intense rainfall,” said an IMD official during a media briefing.

Heavy overnight rains in Mumbai and Thane led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion, and delays in local train services on Wednesday morning. The Central Railway line experienced delays due to inundated tracks, while several BEST buses were diverted from flooded stretches in Dadar, Kurla, and Andheri.
In Pune, early morning rainfall disrupted office-hour traffic on major roads such as Baner Road, Senapati Bapat Road, and Karve Nagar, with minor landslides reported in the outskirts. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) deployed quick-response teams to clear blocked drains and remove debris.
Rural Maharashtra and Agriculture Concerns
The early arrival of heavy rains has had mixed reactions from the agricultural community. While the showers are seen as a boon for early kharif sowing, excessive rainfall could affect soil preparation and seed germination, especially in regions with inadequate water drainage.
Agricultural officers in Vidarbha and Marathwada have urged farmers to delay sowing operations until the weather stabilizes. “Sowing during this erratic phase could result in crop failure. We are advising farmers to monitor rainfall patterns and consult local Krishi Kendras,” said an official from the Maharashtra Department of Agriculture.
Preparedness Measures Underway
In anticipation of further downpours, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) has instructed local administrations to clean stormwater drains, stock emergency supplies, and establish relief shelters in flood-prone areas.
Municipal bodies across the state, including BMC, PCMC, and PMC, are on high alert and have activated 24×7 control rooms to coordinate with weather authorities and emergency services. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid flooded zones, and follow safety updates via verified sources.
