IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Pune as Depression Over Arabian Sea Triggers Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall in Pune

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune as the city braces for heavy rainfall on Thursday, October 30, 2025. The alert follows the formation of a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea that has intensified into a depression, bringing widespread showers to several parts of Maharashtra.

According to the IMD’s latest weather forecast, moderate to heavy rain is expected in Pune and surrounding districts, including Satara, Kolhapur, and Ahmednagar. The department has cautioned residents about potential waterlogging, reduced visibility, and traffic disruptions. Local authorities have been instructed to remain on alert as the weather system continues to move northeastward.

Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have deployed emergency response teams to handle possible incidents of flooding and infrastructure damage. “Our teams are monitoring vulnerable zones, particularly low-lying areas near rivers and drains. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall,” said a PMC spokesperson.

The IMD’s yellow alert signifies that citizens should “be aware” of weather conditions that may cause minor disruptions to daily life. Although not as severe as an orange or red alert, the yellow warning indicates a potential for localized flooding and temporary suspension of outdoor activities.

Meteorologists attribute the sudden increase in rainfall to strong moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea converging with a western disturbance over central India. This interaction has intensified cloud formation over the Konkan region and parts of western Maharashtra. “The depression is likely to persist for the next 24 to 36 hours, maintaining the possibility of heavy rain in isolated pockets,” said an IMD scientist.

Transportation services have also been affected, with several local train routes in the Pune division reporting minor delays due to track inundation. The Pune Airport Authority has issued a travel advisory, urging passengers to check flight status updates before heading to the terminal, as visibility may drop below operational levels during heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, schools and offices in the district have been advised to implement flexible schedules where possible to minimize commuter inconvenience. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors, secure outdoor belongings, and report any waterlogging or power supply issues to civic helplines.

In its extended forecast, the IMD predicts that rainfall activity may gradually decrease from Saturday, November 1, as the depression weakens into a well-marked low-pressure area. However, light to moderate showers may continue across the region over the weekend.

The latest IMD weather update underscores the increasing unpredictability of India’s monsoon and post-monsoon rainfall patterns. Meteorologists continue to emphasize the importance of disaster preparedness and improved drainage infrastructure in rapidly urbanizing cities like Pune.

With the IMD yellow alert in force, Pune is on high alert for heavy rainfall and possible disruptions. Authorities are urging residents to stay informed through official updates and exercise caution until the weather stabilizes.
