India Downs Six Pakistani Aircraft in Operation Sindoor, Confirms IAF Chief

India downs Pakistani aircraft

August 9, 2025 — Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh on Saturday confirmed that India successfully shot down five Pakistani fighter jets along with one Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS)/ELINT aircraft during a retaliatory operation named ‘Operation Sindoor.’ This military action followed a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April 2025.

The IAF Chief described Operation Sindoor as a precise and well-coordinated mission aimed at neutralizing aerial threats from across the border. The destruction of the Pakistani fighter jets and the AWACS aircraft dealt a significant blow to Pakistan’s aerial combat capabilities, particularly impacting their electronic intelligence and early warning systems.

Operation Sindoor was launched as a direct response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that targeted Indian security forces and civilians. The IAF’s swift retaliation marks a shift toward a more assertive stance against cross-border terrorism and highlights India’s advanced military readiness.

Experts say the downing of the AWACS/ELINT aircraft is particularly critical, as such planes play a key role in battlefield surveillance and command and control. This success underscores the IAF’s technological edge and tactical efficiency in complex operations.

The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to national security and protecting its citizens from terror threats originating from Pakistan. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh emphasized that the operation was necessary to send a clear message against terrorism and cross-border aggression.

The development is expected to have strategic implications for Indo-Pak relations, possibly influencing future military and diplomatic engagements. Observers note that the operation demonstrates India’s capability to defend its airspace and respond decisively to security challenges.

As tensions remain high in the region, the Indian Air Force continues to maintain heightened vigilance along the borders to prevent further incursions.
