Team management focuses on long-term fitness of premier pacer
July 30,2025:
India’s frontline fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, will not feature in the upcoming fifth Test against England at The Oval. The decision was taken following medical advice aimed at managing his workload and ensuring sustained fitness for future international assignments.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday that Bumrah experienced mild back discomfort after the fourth Test in Manchester. Though the issue is not considered serious, the medical staff recommended rest to avoid aggravation, especially considering his previous history with back injuries.
“The team’s medical experts have advised rest for Jasprit Bumrah in view of his long-term workload. This step is purely preventive,” said a senior official from the Indian cricket board.
The final match of the five-Test series is set to begin on August 7 at The Oval. With the series finely balanced at 2-2, the absence of Bumrah—who has been instrumental in India’s bowling success on this tour—comes as a notable setback. However, the team appears determined to proceed cautiously, valuing the bowler’s longevity over short-term risk.
Akash Deep Likely to Step In
In Bumrah’s absence, uncapped fast bowler Akash Deep is expected to receive his maiden Test cap. The 27-year-old pacer from Bengal has been part of the extended squad and was recently drafted in as a standby. Known for his consistency and ability to extract movement in helpful conditions, Akash Deep has impressed selectors with his recent red-ball performances for India A.
If selected, he is likely to join the pace attack alongside Mohammed Siraj and Mukesh Kumar, with Shardul Thakur available to provide all-round support.
Focus on Fitness Management
Bumrah’s injury history has prompted the team management to take a conservative approach to his availability, particularly with key tournaments such as the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy, and a tour to Australia on the calendar. The BCCI has been closely monitoring players’ workloads across formats to avoid burnout and reduce the risk of long-term injuries.
Team head coach Rahul Dravid, speaking ahead of the match, noted that managing senior bowlers’ fitness remains a priority. “Jasprit is a crucial part of our plans, and while we would have liked to have him available, preserving his fitness for future series is of greater importance,” he said.
Series Decider at Stake
With the Test series evenly poised, the final encounter at The Oval promises high stakes and heightened anticipation. The Indian team will be hoping that its bowling depth, even without its premier pacer, can deliver under pressure.
All eyes will now be on how Akash Deep performs, should he be selected. His potential debut in such a decisive fixture could mark a turning point in his career and provide the team with another dependable pace option for the future.
