Indian cricket and junior women’s hockey hit contrasting notes as Iyer sidelined and Singh appointed skipper

Shreyas Iyer injury and Jyoti Singh captaincy

India’s cricketing and hockey contingents are facing sharply different fortunes as the national setups gear up for major engagements. In one corner, star batter Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to feature in the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against South Africa after a serious injury. Meanwhile, in a positive development for women’s sport, Jyoti Singh has been handed the captaincy of the Indian junior women’s hockey team for the upcoming FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2025 in Chile.

Shreyas Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, sustained a severe abdominal injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The blow caused a laceration of his spleen and internal bleeding, prompting immediate hospitalisation and surgery. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the bleeding was arrested following the procedure, and Iyer is now stable and recovering.

Despite the positive signs on his health front, team management sources revealed that Iyer is still unlikely to be fit for the three-match ODI series against South Africa set to begin on November 30. Reports indicate that at one point his oxygen saturation had dropped significantly, and he was unable to stand for around ten minutes after the incident. The coaching staff and medical team are proceeding with caution, given the unpredictable nature of spleen injuries and the time required for full recuperation. The team now faces the challenge of reorganising the batting lineup in his absence, which may impact India’s plans for the series in Ranchi, Raipur and Visakhapatnam.

In contrast, the Indian junior women’s hockey team led by Coach Tushar Khandker has picked up momentum ahead of the FIH Junior World Cup. The squad of 20 players announced by Hockey India features several promising young talents and is headed into the tournament with Singh at the helm. Singh continues to captain the side, with the team placed in Pool C alongside Germany, Ireland and Namibia. The campaign gets underway on December 1 in Santiago, Chile. The selection underscores the management’s belief in Singh’s leadership and the squad’s readiness after a rigorous preparatory regime, with emphasis on defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.

While the absence of Shreyas Iyer temporarily dims India’s prospects in the upcoming ODI series, the junior women’s hockey fraternity has been buoyed by Jyoti Singh’s appointment and the assembled squad’s readiness for the world stage. For Indian cricket, the priority will be managing the recovery of a key player and adjusting the lineup; for Indian hockey, the focus shifts to capitalising on youthful promise and leadership at the global event. Both stories reflect the contrasting trajectories of two major national teams at a crucial juncture.
