In a significant diplomatic development aimed at strengthening bilateral defence relations, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff of India, met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo on September 23. The meeting focused on enhancing maritime security, fostering defence cooperation, and promoting stability in the Indian Ocean region.
Admiral Tripathi is on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from September 22 to 25, reflecting India’s commitment to deepening strategic ties with its neighbour. The discussions underscored mutual interest in advancing naval collaboration amid evolving regional security challenges. Both leaders emphasised the importance of developing strong maritime cooperation to ensure safe and secure sea lanes, which are vital for regional trade and economic stability.
The dialogue highlighted the need for joint training exercises, capacity-building initiatives, and coordinated operational activities between the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy. Both sides recognised the importance of interoperability in addressing common maritime threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking. The meeting also reaffirmed the success of SLINEX-25, the 12th edition of the India–Sri Lanka bilateral naval exercise held in August 2025, which significantly strengthened operational synergy and mutual trust between the two navies.
Admiral Tripathi and Prime Minister Amarasuriya discussed broader defence cooperation, including disaster relief coordination and humanitarian assistance, underlining the shared responsibility of the two nations to respond effectively to emergencies in the region. Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed appreciation for India’s continued support in building Sri Lanka’s maritime capabilities, while Admiral Tripathi reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening cooperation through training, joint exercises, and technology sharing.
