Indian Railways Introduces ₹15 Janata Khana Meals Across the Country

Indian Railways begins ₹15 Janata Khana meal service for passengers nationwide.

In a move aimed at enhancing passenger welfare, Indian Railways has introduced ₹15 Janata Khana meals at railway stations across India. The initiative seeks to offer affordable and hygienic food options to passengers, especially those from economically weaker sections.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is overseeing the implementation of this low-cost meal service, which is now available at more than 1,000 railway stations. The meals consist of simple, regionally adapted dishes like rice with dal, poori with sabzi, or vegetable pulao, depending on the location.

Officials stated that the objective is to provide travelers with access to nutritious meals at minimal cost, addressing the needs of daily commuters and long-distance travelers. The meals are served through clearly marked counters labeled “Janata Khana” and are prepared under strict hygiene and food safety norms.

A senior IRCTC official remarked, “The Janata Khana scheme reinforces our commitment to serve quality food at a nominal price, ensuring that every passenger, regardless of their financial background, has access to basic nourishment during their journey.”

Signboards and guidance materials have been placed at stations to direct passengers to the food counters. Each meal is served in eco-friendly packaging, aligning with the Indian Railways’ sustainability efforts.

Early reactions from passengers have been largely positive. Many commuters have praised the affordability and taste of the food, sharing their experiences on social media. Regular inspections and quality checks are planned to maintain consistency across all stations.

The introduction of Janata Khana is part of a broader passenger-friendly approach by Indian Railways, which also includes plans for economical drinking water kiosks and mobile food units, particularly for smaller stations and remote areas.
