Indian Railways to Roll Out AI-Based ‘DRISHTI’ System to Enhance Freight Train Safety

Indian Railways is set to deploy a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) based locking monitoring system named DRISHTI on its freight wagons, aimed at drastically reducing manual inspections and improving safety for long-haul freight operations. The initiative comes as part of Indian Railways’ broader push to integrate digital technologies for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and enhanced operational safety.

The DRISHTI system has been developed in collaboration between the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati Technology Innovation & Development Foundation (IITG TIDF). The prototype has already been under trial for nearly ten months on selected wagons, and preliminary results have shown encouraging accuracy and reliability.

The AI-powered system uses advanced cameras and sensors strategically mounted on freight wagons to monitor door positions and locking conditions in real time. It can automatically detect if a door is unlocked, tampered with, or improperly secured during transit. This represents a significant advancement in freight safety, especially for long-haul trains where manual inspection of every wagon door is often impractical and time-consuming.

According to officials, the DRISHTI system provides real-time status updates on door lock conditions, detects abnormal events during movement, and issues automated alerts to railway personnel without disrupting normal train operations.
