Indore First City in Country to Roll Out DigiPIN Digital Address System

Indore becomes India’s first city to launch DigiPIN, a digital address system with geo-tagged codes.

Indore has added another feather to its cap by becoming the first city in India to implement the DigiPIN digital address system. The announcement was made on Monday, marking a significant step toward urban digital transformation under the Smart Cities Mission.

The new system replaces conventional street addresses with a six-character alphanumeric digital code, known as DigiPIN, that is geo-tagged to a specific location. This initiative has been launched in collaboration with the Indore Smart City Development Limited (ISCDL), with support from the Department of Telecommunications.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Harshika Singh, while addressing the press, said, “DigiPIN will remove the confusion and duplication commonly associated with traditional addresses. This will help in better delivery of government services, postal dispatches, emergency responses, and e-commerce logistics.”

Each DigiPIN code corresponds to an exact spot on the digital map and can be generated by citizens using a mobile application or through the official website. For those without internet access, the facility will be made available at ward offices and government kiosks.

Authorities have stated that the system will also assist in improving efficiency in areas such as ambulance services, disaster management, food delivery, and field surveys. The civic body estimates that delivery errors may drop by up to 30 percent once DigiPIN becomes fully operational.

The launch of the digital address system has received support from both government and private sectors. Logistics firms, food delivery companies, and e-commerce platforms have been invited to integrate DigiPIN into their operations. Discussions with India Post, Amazon, and Flipkart are already underway.

Awareness campaigns have also been rolled out to educate residents and promote voluntary adoption. The municipality has set a target to convert 90 percent of all residential and commercial addresses to DigiPIN format by December 2025.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs were also present during the launch and lauded Indore’s efforts in leading the country toward a digitally inclusive and smart urban framework.

With this initiative, Indore becomes the pioneer in introducing an address system that is uniform, precise, and technology-driven, likely paving the way for similar models to be introduced in other smart cities across the nation.
