August 12, 2025 – The world is celebrating International Youth Day 2025 today with the United Nations highlighting the critical role of young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” emphasizes grassroots initiatives by youth that contribute to social, economic, and environmental progress.

Observed annually on August 12, International Youth Day was declared by the UN General Assembly in 1999 to raise awareness about youth-related challenges and celebrate their contributions to global development. The 2025 observance is being led by UN-Habitat, with the central event taking place in Nairobi, Kenya. The program features discussions, exhibitions, and workshops aimed at showcasing youth-led solutions to pressing global issues.

In India, events have been organized across several states. In Visakhapatnam, hundreds participated in the “Red Run” to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention and promote health education among youth. In New Delhi, non-profits and youth organizations are hosting climate action workshops, entrepreneurship mentoring programs, and digital literacy sessions, reflecting the theme’s emphasis on local action for global goals.

Globally, the Nairobi event has brought together policymakers, community leaders, and youth representatives from multiple countries to share success stories of projects addressing urban poverty, climate resilience, gender equality, and education access. Virtual forums have also been set up to enable young people worldwide to participate.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his message for the occasion, stated, “Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the change-makers of today. By supporting their ideas and initiatives, we pave the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.”

Experts say that with India’s large youth population, the country has a unique opportunity to lead in youth-driven innovation, job creation, and civic engagement. They stress that policy reforms, skill development programs, and greater resource allocation are essential to unlock the full potential of the youth demographic.

As global challenges intensify, from climate change to economic instability, International Youth Day 2025 serves as a timely reminder that sustainable solutions often begin at the local level—and that empowering young people is key to building resilient and inclusive societies.
