August 26, 2025: At least twenty people, including five journalists, were killed yesterday when Israeli forces launched two separate airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. The attack has sparked international condemnation and heightened concerns over the safety of journalists and medical personnel in conflict zones.
According to Palestinian health authorities, the first strike struck the upper floors of the hospital, where journalists were stationed. The second strike occurred shortly thereafter, hitting rescue teams and bystanders who had gathered at the scene following the initial bombing. Among the deceased were Reuters journalist Hussam al-Masri, Associated Press reporter Mariam Abu Dagga, Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Salama, freelance journalist Moaz Abu Taha, and Middle East Eye correspondent Ahmed Abu Aziz. Photographer Hatem Khaled of Reuters sustained injuries in the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement expressing deep regret over the incident, describing it as a “tragic mishap.” He reiterated that Israel’s military operations are aimed at Hamas targets and not medical facilities or journalists. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the airstrikes and announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident has drawn swift international reaction. The United Nations Secretary-General called for an immediate inquiry and urged all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary condemned the attack as “intolerable” and emphasized adherence to international humanitarian law.
Observers note that the strike underscores the growing dangers faced by journalists covering the conflict in Gaza. Since the onset of hostilities in October 2023, more than 240 media workers have lost their lives in the region, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Nasser Hospital, one of the few operational medical facilities in southern Gaza, has now become a focal point of humanitarian concern.
The tragic loss of life at Nasser Hospital highlights the urgent need for the protection of civilians and press personnel in conflict zones. While Israel has pledged an investigation, the international community continues to call for accountability and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
