ISRO Expands Launch Infrastructure with Second Complex in Tamil Nadu

ISRO launch complex construction

August 2025: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to complete a new launch complex at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu by December 2026. This second facility, located in the Tuticorin district, is designed specifically for Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) missions and is expected to support around 25 launches every year.

The site, covering more than 2,300 acres, is positioned about 88 kilometers from ISRO’s Propulsion Research Complex at Mahendragiri, facilitating smooth transportation of rockets and equipment. The new complex is part of ISRO’s efforts to strengthen India’s launch infrastructure and meet the rising global demand for small satellite deployments.

The SSLV is a lightweight, cost-efficient rocket capable of delivering payloads of up to 500 kilograms to low Earth orbit. By dedicating Kulasekarapattinam to SSLV operations, ISRO aims to offer faster and more flexible launch services, boosting India’s competitiveness in the international small satellite market.

In addition to technological benefits, the project is expected to bring economic advantages to the region. The launch complex is likely to attract investments, generate jobs, and support related industries. Its close proximity to existing ISRO facilities is expected to streamline logistics and enhance operational efficiency.

ISRO officials emphasize that the new site will complement the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, providing additional capacity for scientific and commercial missions. Once operational, the Kulasekarapattinam facility will be instrumental in advancing India’s space program and its participation in the global satellite launch sector.

The project highlights ISRO’s commitment to developing advanced space infrastructure and strengthening India’s capabilities in satellite technology, while contributing to the nation’s scientific, technological, and economic growth.
