In a significant development for India’s judiciary, Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He is scheduled to take office on 24 November 2025, succeeding Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, whose tenure ends on 23 November 2025. The appointment was formally cleared by the government and announced by the Union Law Ministry.
The appointment of Justice Surya Kant follows the long-standing convention of seniority in the Supreme Court. The outgoing CJI, Justice Gavai, recommended him as successor, in accordance with judicial tradition. The Centre completed the formalities within seven days—shorter than the usual fortnight—highlighting the efficiency of the process.
Born on 10 February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant has had a distinguished judicial career marked by integrity and reform-oriented decisions. He began his legal practice at the District Court in Hisar in 1984 before moving to the Punjab & Haryana High Court in 1985. In January 2004, he was appointed as a judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, later becoming Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.
Justice Kant is widely recognised for his commitment to access to justice and legal reform. As the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) since May 2025, he has prioritised the strengthening of free legal aid, awareness initiatives, and institutional reform aimed at empowering marginalised sections of society. His judicial philosophy often reflects a balance between procedural fairness and social justice.
Justice Surya Kant’s tenure as CJI will commence on 24 November 2025, and given his date of retirement on 9 February 2027, his term is expected to last approximately 15 months. His appointment signifies a continuation of the Supreme Court’s focus on transparency, efficiency, and constitutional integrity.
His leadership will coincide with a crucial period for the judiciary, as the Supreme Court grapples with multiple challenges, including the growing backlog of cases, judicial appointments, and evolving questions surrounding technology, environment, and fundamental rights.
