Kedarnath Dham Yatra Suspended Due to Heavy Rainfall; One Pilgrim Dies, Yatra Postponed Until Further Notice

Kedarnath Yatra suspended

June 17: The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended following heavy rainfall in the region, resulting in the tragic death of one pilgrim. Authorities have announced that the yatra has been postponed until further notice, citing safety concerns for devotees traveling through the mountainous terrain.

According to officials, continuous rainfall since early morning led to slippery conditions and triggered landslides on the trekking route between Gaurikund and Kedarnath. A pilgrim from Madhya Pradesh reportedly lost his life after slipping near Rambara, a stretch known for its steep and rugged trail.

District Magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar confirmed the suspension of the yatra and urged pilgrims to remain in safe areas. “Due to persistent heavy rainfall and unsafe conditions on the route, the Kedarnath Yatra has been halted as a precautionary measure. We are monitoring the situation closely,” he said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, including Rudraprayag district. Following the alert, disaster management teams, SDRF personnel, and local police were deployed along critical points such as Sonprayag, Gaurikund, and Linchauli to manage the situation.

All helicopter services to Kedarnath have also been suspended due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions. Authorities have set up control rooms and helpline numbers to assist stranded pilgrims and provide updates on the weather and yatra status.

The state government has appealed to devotees to postpone their travel plans and remain updated with official announcements. Pilgrims already en route to the shrine have been advised to take shelter at designated relief centers until the weather improves.

Over the years, the Uttarakhand government has made significant efforts to strengthen the safety infrastructure of the Char Dham Yatra, including GPS-based tracking, registration systems, and health monitoring checkpoints. Despite these initiatives, the Himalayan region remains vulnerable to extreme weather events during the monsoon season.

This year’s Kedarnath Yatra, which began in May, has seen a heavy influx of pilgrims. However, the current weather disruption has once again highlighted the need for real-time weather assessment and strict adherence to travel advisories.

As of now, there is no confirmation on when the yatra will resume. Authorities have assured that once conditions stabilize and safety checks are completed, an update regarding the resumption will be issued.
