Kerala Couple Found Dead in Apparent Suicide: Police Launch Investigation

Kerala couple suicide

June 30, 2025 — In a tragic incident that has shocked the local community, a young couple was found dead inside their residence in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district on Sunday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The deceased have been identified as Vishnu, aged 32, and his wife Anju, aged 30. According to officials, the incident came to light after Vishnu’s mother, who resides separately, tried to contact the couple several times by phone but received no response. Concerned by the silence, she reached out to neighbours and requested them to check on the couple. Upon their visit, both Vishnu and Anju were found unresponsive, prompting an immediate call to the police.

When law enforcement and emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they found the couple lying motionless inside their home. Initial assessments indicated that they had died several hours earlier. While no suicide note was discovered at the location, officers have not ruled out the possibility of suicide and are treating it as the primary angle of investigation.

Domestic Issues Suspected

Preliminary enquiries by the local police suggest that the couple may have been going through personal or financial stress, although the exact trigger remains unknown. Neighbours have reportedly informed the police that the couple had kept to themselves and had not shown any obvious signs of distress in recent days.

“Based on the condition of the scene and early findings, we suspect it to be a case of suicide. However, we are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death,” said a senior police official involved in the investigation.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code and have begun questioning relatives and close friends to gather more information.

Community in Shock

The sudden deaths have left the neighbourhood stunned. Several locals gathered near the house as news of the incident spread. “It’s heartbreaking. They were a quiet, decent couple. We never imagined something like this could happen,” said a neighbour, visibly shaken by the news.

Mental health experts have reiterated the need for increased awareness and open conversations around emotional well-being, especially among young couples facing economic or familial pressures. Kerala, while known for its high literacy and healthcare standards, has also seen a steady rise in reported suicide cases over the past few years.

Rising Concern Over Mental Health

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Kerala recorded over 9,000 suicide cases in 2023, with family issues and mental health struggles being major contributing factors. This incident once again brings to focus the urgent need for stronger support systems and counselling services.

Authorities have urged the public to reach out for help in times of distress. The Kerala Health Department continues to run its 24×7 mental health helpline at 1056 for anyone in emotional crisis.

As the investigation progresses, police are hoping that electronic evidence, including phone records and any private communications, may shed more light on the couple’s final moments.
