4 July, 2025-In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken the residents of Pune, local police have intensified efforts to apprehend a man who allegedly raped a 24-year-old woman in Kondhwa after posing as a courier delivery agent. The crime, which occurred earlier this week, has raised serious concerns over public safety and the misuse of delivery service disguises by criminals.
According to the police, the accused arrived at the victim’s residence under the pretense of delivering a package. Upon gaining entry, he allegedly threatened the woman at knifepoint and assaulted her. Following the incident, he fled the scene, and his identity remains unknown. Authorities have since formed multiple teams to track him down using surveillance footage and technical analysis.
Senior officials from the Pune Police Commissionerate confirmed that CCTV footage from nearby localities has provided some leads. “We have collected visuals from over 40 surveillance cameras in and around the Kondhwa area. The suspect is seen wearing a courier company uniform and carrying a delivery bag. Our cyber and crime branch teams are analyzing every clue to identify and trace the accused,” said a senior investigating officer.
The police also suspect that the courier attire may have been purchased online or stolen. They are now working in coordination with local courier service providers and e-commerce platforms to verify if any such uniforms or equipment have recently been reported missing or misused.
The survivor, who is currently receiving medical and psychological care, was able to give the police a partial description of the attacker, which has been instrumental in creating a sketch. A reward has been announced for anyone who provides credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
This case has sparked outrage across social media and among women’s rights organizations, who are demanding stricter regulations on verification mechanisms for individuals in uniformed delivery roles. Many have also urged housing societies and individuals to adopt stricter verification protocols before allowing strangers inside residential premises.
In response to the growing concern, Pune Police have issued a public advisory urging residents to confirm the identity of delivery personnel before opening their doors. “People should cross-check the delivery details via the company’s official app or helpline and avoid opening the door if something appears suspicious. We are also urging housing societies to install or upgrade their CCTV systems and keep records of all visitors,” said a police spokesperson.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders and activists have criticized the state government and law enforcement agencies for what they allege is a slow response to rising crimes against women. In light of this case, calls for fast-tracked justice and more robust preventive measures have gained momentum.
As the manhunt continues, the Pune Police have assured the public that every possible effort is being made to ensure justice is served swiftly. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for heightened vigilance and stronger safety protocols in urban settings.
