Maharashtra Declares Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as State Festival

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav

July 11,2025:
The Maharashtra government has officially granted Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav the status of a state festival, recognizing its strong cultural presence and community importance across the state.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced the decision on Thursday, stating that the festival represents Maharashtra’s spirit of unity and tradition. The move aims to strengthen cultural values while ensuring organized and inclusive celebrations across urban and rural regions.

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav was introduced as a public event by Lokmanya Tilak in the late 19th century to encourage collective celebration and community bonding. Since then, it has become one of the most widely observed festivals in the state.

Following this declaration, government departments will now extend official assistance to registered mandals during the festival period. This includes support in crowd control, safety arrangements, permissions, and promotion of eco-friendly practices.

The new status is expected to:

Aid local idol-makers and artisans

Improve coordination between civic bodies and festival organizers

Promote safe and environment-conscious celebrations

Boost tourism during the festive season

Several major mandals, including Mumbai’s iconic ones, welcomed the announcement, saying it reflects the importance of community-led cultural events. The state is also expected to issue fresh guidelines encouraging sustainable idol materials and proper immersion practices.

With Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 approaching, preparations across cities have already begun. The recognition of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as a state festival is likely to bring more structured support and enhanced civic participation in the coming years.
