August 26,2025 – Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., one of India’s leading automobile manufacturers, is preparing to expand its production base with a new greenfield facility. Reports indicate that the company has approached the Maharashtra government seeking 350 acres of land in Igatpuri, Nashik district, where it already operates a manufacturing unit.
The proposed project is aimed at enhancing the company’s capacity to meet growing domestic demand as well as to strengthen its export operations. According to persons familiar with the matter, the move comes at a time when the auto major is witnessing strong momentum in the utility vehicle segment, driven by robust sales of models such as the Scorpio-N, XUV700 and Thar.
Officials have conveyed that the discussions are still at a preliminary stage. If approved, the new site will be developed as a modern, fully integrated plant. The facility is expected to support Mahindra’s expansion strategy by catering to both traditional internal combustion models and the company’s future electric vehicle (EV) line-up.
Industry analysts note that the timing of the decision is significant. With the Indian passenger vehicle market on an upswing and global demand for SUVs on the rise, additional production capacity could enable Mahindra to consolidate its position among the top players in the segment. Exports to emerging markets are also likely to receive a push once the facility comes onstream.
The company’s existing Igatpuri plant has long been a cornerstone of its manufacturing network, producing engines and critical components. Setting up a second large-scale unit in the same region would allow Mahindra to leverage established infrastructure, workforce skills, and logistics support available in Maharashtra.
The state government has been actively encouraging fresh investment in the automobile and electric mobility sector. Officials are reportedly considering Mahindra’s request for land allocation, as the project is expected to generate employment and strengthen the state’s industrial base.
Market observers believe that if the plans materialize, Mahindra will be better positioned to address supply chain challenges that have occasionally constrained output in recent years. Furthermore, the integration of advanced technology in the new plant could mark a significant step toward the company’s ambition of achieving leadership in the EV space.
While no official timeline has been announced, company sources suggest that detailed planning is underway, with further clarity expected once the land acquisition process is finalized.
In conclusion, Mahindra & Mahindra’s move to scout for land in Igatpuri underscores its intent to fortify both domestic operations and global outreach. With rising demand for passenger vehicles and a fast-evolving electric mobility landscape, the proposed greenfield project may emerge as a crucial pillar of the automaker’s growth in the coming decade.
