August 19,2025 – Relentless monsoon rains brought Mumbai to a near standstill on Tuesday, forcing the closure of schools, colleges, and government offices, while crippling the city’s transport system. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai and its adjoining districts under a red alert, forecasting further heavy downpours in the coming days.
Train services, considered the backbone of Mumbai’s transport network, were severely disrupted as several stretches of track went under water. Commuters were left stranded at stations, while long queues formed at bus depots and metro stations as people searched for alternate modes of travel. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, including Kurla, Sion, and Dadar, where residential colonies and main roads remained submerged.
Air travel was also affected. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport witnessed multiple delays as the downpour reduced visibility and slowed ground handling operations. Municipal teams have been deployed to pump out water from flooded roads, while emergency control rooms continue to monitor the situation round-the-clock.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to remain indoors unless necessary. Hospitals and essential services remain on high alert, and power outages in parts of the city are being gradually restored.
Kishtwar Tragedy
In Jammu and Kashmir, a separate weather disaster has left the region in mourning. A massive cloudburst struck Kishtwar district, causing flash floods that swept away homes, bridges, and farmland. Officials confirmed that 64 people have lost their lives, while several others remain missing.
Rescue and relief operations are being conducted jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Indian Army. Difficult terrain and damaged infrastructure are hampering operations, but efforts are underway to provide shelter, food, and medical care to affected families. Relief camps have been established to accommodate survivors displaced by the calamity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims, assuring all possible assistance for the ongoing relief measures. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also reviewed the ground situation and directed authorities to expedite rescue operations.
