NASA Considers Nuclear Option to Prevent Asteroid 2024 YR4 from Impacting the Moon in 2032

NASA scientists are exploring the possibility of using nuclear explosives to prevent asteroid 2024 YR4 from colliding with the Moon in December 2032. While Earth is no longer considered at risk, a lunar impact could pose significant threats to space infrastructure.

Discovered in December 2024, asteroid 2024 YR4 is an Apollo-type near-Earth object approximately 60 meters in diameter. Initially, it was feared to have a 3.1% chance of impacting Earth in 2032. However, updated observations have reduced this risk to a negligible 0.0017%.

Despite the diminished Earth impact risk, scientists have identified a 4% chance that 2024 YR4 could strike the Moon on December 22, 2032. Such an impact could eject debris into space, endangering satellites and astronauts. The European Space Agency has also highlighted this potential threat, emphasizing the need for planetary defense strategies.

In response to this threat, scientists are considering a “nuclear robust disruption” strategy. This would involve launching two 100-kiloton nuclear devices to either disrupt or deflect the asteroid. One device would serve as a backup in case the first fails or could be safely detonated in deep space. This approach was chosen over a deflection method similar to NASA’s 2022 DART mission due to time constraints and the inability to gather sufficient reconnaissance on YR4 before the critical window.

While the lunar impact remains unlikely, researchers stress the importance of developing and testing planetary defense strategies. The proposed mission could serve as a valuable opportunity to refine spacecraft designs and response timelines for future threats. If approved, a launch for the nuclear mission could occur between 2029 and 2031.
