11 July, 2025-NASA has announced that the return of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) crew from the International Space Station (ISS), including India’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, has been postponed to July 14. The mission, which was initially planned as a 14-day stay, has been extended to allow the crew additional time to complete vital research and operational objectives in microgravity.
The Ax-4 crew, comprising four international astronauts, launched aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon in late June under the collaboration between NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX. The mission marked the fourth private astronaut mission to the ISS and is considered one of the most research-intensive commercial missions to date.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the Indian with the longest single stay in space during this mission, will now remain in orbit for over 18 days. He has been an integral part of several experiments aboard the ISS, particularly in the fields of muscle physiology and material sciences. The extension of his stay has been welcomed by India’s space and scientific community, with many highlighting the significance of his contributions to international space research.
NASA stated that the extension was necessary to allow the crew to continue working on more than 30 planned science and technology experiments. These include investigations into the effects of microgravity on human health, fluid behavior, and advanced manufacturing processes—areas that are critical for future long-duration missions and potential deep-space travel.
The Ax-4 mission also serves as a key milestone for Axiom Space, which plans to launch the world’s first commercial space station by the end of this decade. The experience and data gathered from this mission are expected to inform the design and operation of future commercial orbital platforms.
NASA confirmed that undocking procedures are scheduled to begin on July 14, subject to weather conditions and spacecraft readiness. The crew will return to Earth aboard the same SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, concluding what has become a landmark mission for both private spaceflight and international collaboration.
With this extension, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has set a new benchmark for Indian astronauts in space and further strengthened India’s growing presence in the global space ecosystem. His participation in the Ax-4 mission has also renewed focus on India’s upcoming Gaganyaan program, which aims to send Indian astronauts to space aboard an indigenous spacecraft.
The extended mission is seen as a win-win for all stakeholders involved, enhancing scientific output while highlighting the expanding role of private companies like Axiom Space in shaping the future of human spaceflight.
