In a historic development, Nepal has appointed Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice, as the country’s interim Prime Minister following a week of intense youth-led protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and the dissolution of parliament. Karki’s appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes Nepal’s first female head of government.

The protests, predominantly led by the Gen Z generation, were ignited by a controversial social media ban imposed by the government. Although the ban was later lifted, unrest continued over broader grievances such as youth unemployment and political nepotism. Violence during the week of demonstrations resulted in at least 51 deaths and over 1,300 injuries, prompting the military to impose a curfew and take control of the capital.

On September 12, 2025, President Ram Chandra Poudel administered the oath of office to Sushila Karki at the presidential palace in Kathmandu. The ceremony was broadcast live, marking a historic moment for Nepal’s political leadership. Karki, 73, is widely respected for her integrity and anti-corruption stance. During her tenure as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017, she was known for taking a firm stand against corruption. Her appointment was supported by youth leaders, who viewed her as a neutral figure capable of leading the country through a transitional period.

Following Karki’s appointment, the interim government has been tasked with restoring order, investigating the violence during the protests, and preparing for general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. The dissolution of parliament and the establishment of an interim government aim to address the demands for political reform and accountability.

The international community has expressed support for Nepal’s efforts to restore stability. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Karki on her appointment and reaffirmed India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace and prosperity.

Sushila Karki’s appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister represents a significant step toward addressing the nation’s political challenges. As the country prepares for upcoming elections, Karki’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating the path toward stability and reform.
