2 September,2025 – Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has dismissed its CEO, Laurent Freixe, after an internal investigation revealed he had an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate, a violation of the company’s Code of Business Conduct. Freixe, who had been with Nestlé for four decades, served as CEO for just over one year before his removal.
The investigation, conducted under the supervision of Nestlé Chairman Paul Bulcke and independent director Pablo Isla, concluded that Freixe’s actions were inconsistent with the company’s ethical standards. In a statement, the board emphasized that the decision was necessary to maintain strong governance and uphold corporate integrity.
Philipp Navratil, a veteran Nestlé executive with extensive leadership experience, including heading Nespresso, has been appointed as the new CEO. The company noted that Navratil’s appointment would ensure continuity and stability during this period of leadership transition.
Freixe’s tenure as CEO had focused on refocusing Nestlé’s operations and tackling challenges such as declining sales and investor concerns. However, his leadership was also marked by controversies, including a French investigation into alleged unauthorized filtration methods in Nestlé’s bottled water and a U.S. food recall. Under his direction, the company’s share price fell by over 17 percent, reflecting investor skepticism regarding the company’s strategic direction.
The rapid succession of CEOs in a short timeframe has raised questions among analysts about Nestlé’s governance and long-term strategy. Experts suggest that while Navratil may bring stability, the company faces significant challenges in restoring investor confidence and addressing operational hurdles.
Nestlé has reaffirmed its commitment to strategic priorities and corporate values. The board’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining high ethical standards, transparency, and governance practices as key pillars for the company’s long-term success.
