In a major development for medical aspirants, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 9,075 additional MBBS seats for the NEET UG 2025–26 academic session. With this expansion, the total number of MBBS seats in India, excluding AIIMS and JIPMER, now stands at 1,26,600.
The increase in seats is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to medical education and strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure. The newly added seats will be distributed across 812 medical colleges nationwide, providing greater opportunities for aspiring doctors and reducing the intense competition traditionally associated with MBBS admissions.
States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have seen significant increases in seat availability. Karnataka, for instance, has added over 1,250 seats, bringing its total intake to 13,645. Several established institutions, including Subbaiah Medical College and BGS Global Institute, have received an allocation of 50 additional seats each. Similarly, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have expanded seat capacities across multiple colleges, reflecting a nationwide push to improve medical education access.
This expansion is particularly crucial as the demand for medical professionals continues to grow in India, fueled by an increasing population and rising healthcare needs.
