August 2, 2025:
A terrorist was gunned down during an ongoing encounter between security forces and militants in the Akhal forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The operation, codenamed Operation Akhal, was launched following credible intelligence inputs regarding the presence of armed militants in the region.

According to defence officials, the joint operation was initiated on Friday evening by personnel from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The forces began a cordon-and-search mission after receiving information about militant activity in the densely forested region.

As the troops moved in, they came under heavy fire from the hiding militants, which led to a fierce gunfight. One unidentified terrorist has been neutralized so far, and search efforts are underway to locate any remaining operatives in the area.

“The operation is ongoing. One terrorist has been eliminated. His identity and affiliation are being verified,” a senior Army officer confirmed.

Security personnel have tightened the cordon around the Akhal forest zone, and aerial surveillance is being employed to monitor the terrain. Given the challenging topography and the potential presence of more terrorists, the operation is being conducted with heightened caution.

This development follows closely after Operation Mahadev, which led to the elimination of three heavily armed terrorists in a separate encounter earlier this week. Those individuals were believed to be involved in the recent Pahalgam terror incident and had reportedly crossed over from Pakistan.

Security analysts believe that the two successive operations—Mahadev and Akhal—indicate increased attempts by terror groups to infiltrate South Kashmir ahead of the upcoming festival season. Intelligence agencies have raised concerns about coordinated efforts to disrupt peace in the Valley.

Local residents have been advised to remain indoors while the area remains under a strict security cover. Internet access in nearby areas has reportedly been limited as a preventive step.

Officials maintain that these operations are part of a wider counter-terror strategy designed to eliminate militant infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The coordinated efforts of multiple security agencies have resulted in several successful neutralizations in recent months.

As Operation Akhal continues, authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activity. Updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
